Urinary Tract Infection
Standard Definition

Commonly referred to as cystitis, a urinary tract infection (UTI) involves infection of the bladder and sometimes the kidneys. The condition is more common in women and children, and if left untreated may cause kidney damage.

Underlying Disruption in Function

UTIs are caused by common bacteria. Preventing infection relies on proper hygiene, effective flushing of the bladder, a robust immune system and prevention of bacteria taking a hold of the urinary mucosal lining. Recurrent infection indicates that these defences are inadequate, due to numerous factors as outlined below.

Possible Causes, Triggers & Exacerbating Factors
  • High sugar diet
  • Diabetes
  • Changes in sexual activity: partner, frequency, intensity
  • Pregnancy
  • Poor immunity
  • Use of irritant chemicals (detergents, spermicides)
  • Use of irritant contraceptive devices (e.g., diaphragm)
  • Use of oral contraceptives, antibiotics, corticosteroids and other drugs
Common Signs & Symptoms
  • Painful urination, with a burning sensation, frequency, and urgency
  • Blood or pus in urine
  • Pain or cramping in the lower abdomen
  • Chills, fever (fever may be the only symptom in infants and children)
  • Strong-smelling urine
