Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Standard Definition

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is the most common form of an autoimmune disease called lupus. This involves inflammation and damage of the joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels, and/or the brain. Lupus is also considered a 'rheumatic' disease because it can cause aches, pain, and stiffness in the joints, muscles and bones.

People with lupus experience periods of chronic disease and remissions. Some triggers are known to cause flare ups, however the full picture is still unclear.

Please consult with your healthcare practitioner for a proper assessment, diagnosis and treatment. This is a complex disease and requires careful monitoring.

Underlying Disruption in Function

The cause of lupus is not fully known. Researchers believe that there is probably no single cause but rather a combination of genetic, environmental, and possibly hormonal factors that work together. Typically, an autoimmune disease requires a predisposition (eg. genetic) and a trigger or sustaining factor (eg. infection, stress, nutritional deficiency). Identifying these triggers or sustaining factors may allow a treatment approach that slows the progress or reduces the symptoms of this complex disease.
