Infertility (Male)
Standard Definition

Male infertility is often described in terms of sperm quantity (count or concentration), movement (motility) and quality (morphology). Male infertility can take the form of low sperm count, lack of motility, high levels of abnormal sperm, clumping, sperm antibodies, or no sperm at all. It is important to note that many men, although not infertile, may be subfertile due to factors that affect sperm quantity and quality. Poor results in one or a combination of all factors may be revealed on a thorough semen analysis.

Underlying Disruption in Function

Sperm health is reflective of the man' s general health and nutritional status. Sperm take on average 117 days to be formed, matured, stored and finally ejaculated. During this time they are susceptible to damage from smoking, alcohol, caffeine, toxins, heat exposure, nutritional deficiencies and infections. Semen concentrates antioxidant nutrients in an attempt to protect these small cells from damage.

Possible Causes, Triggers & Exacerbating Factors
  • Hormonal factors eg. Low testosterone
  • Disease and ill health eg. Genitourinary and systemic infections, some medications, liver disease
  • Environmental and occupational factors - air, water and food-derived pollution, chemicals, pesticides, fertilisers, paints, solvents, heavy metals, excessive heat, radiation
  • Lifestyle factors - smoking, alcohol, caffeine, recreational drugs, poor diet, nutritional deficiencies, saunas/spas
It has been shown that many of the above factors not only can contribute to infertility but, if a pregnancy does occur, there is a greater chance of miscarriage and ill health of the child.
Common Signs & Symptoms

Each man experiencing infertility has his own unique set of symptoms associated with his reproductive and general health. A semen analysis is the best marker of fertility.
