Nutrition, Lifestyle and Fitness Assessment

Health alert: are you at risk?
  • Do you have a family history of heart disease, diabetes or cancer?
  • Do you have consistently high levels of stress due to work pressures, family responsibilities or other commitments?
  • Do you wake up feeling groggy?
  • Is your digestive system sluggish?
  • Is your diet lacking in essential nutrients but high in convenience foods?

If you can answer yes to any of these questions, it is essential that you pay some attention to your health by evaluating the demands you place on your body and mind.

What affects your health?

Good health is a state of wellbeing achieved by balance. This balance can be disrupted by any one of the following factors:

  • The quality of our diet and eating habits
  • The regularity with which we eat
  • The efficiency of our digestive system
  • Our living and working environment
  • Our level of physical activity
  • The way we feel and think about things

In Australia the main causes of death are cancer and coronary heart disease. Nutrition and lifestyle are the major contributing factors to these diseases, so to a large degree, we can play an active role in preventing them. Another disease of increasingly growing concern is Type 2 diabetes. It has been shown that a healthy diet and exercise regime can be more effective than medication in halting its development.

What is the NLFA?

NLFA stands for Nutrition, Lifestyle and Fitness Assessment. It is a thorough analysis of diet, lifestyle, stress, physical condition and presenting symptoms using specific diagnostic tools. It is focused on the ?biomarkers? or indicators that are closely associated with ageing and age-related disorders. The NLFA helps to identify any contributors to ill health so you can work on improving them.

The NLFA was developed by Dr Jeff Jankelson, Vanessa Tomlinson, Dr Joachim Fluhrer and Dr Ian Gillam.

What is included?

The NLFA consultation lasts one hour. The session will start with a discussion with a qualified Health Practitioner who will complete a detailed review of your main health concerns, diet, lifestyle, stress and exercise profile. This will be followed by the following assessments:

  • Height, weight and Body Mass Index
  • Blood pressure check
  • Body fat analysis (skin fold test)
  • Cellular Health Analysis (measuring your fat mass, lean muscle mass, total body water, intra cellular and extra cellular fluid levels and cellular toxicity)
  • Urinary Indican Test (a measure of the level of putrefaction in the gut assesses how well you are digesting and absorbing your food)
  • Flexibility assessment of the range of motion of your muscles and joints

Finally you will discuss the findings of each test with your practitioner who will develop a tailor-made ?Better Health Plan? so you can address all the points of concern to you.

How do I make an appointment?

Please call one of our centres to make an appointment. The appointment should be made at least four working days in advance to allow time for the relevant documents to be sent out. This includes several questionnaires that you need to complete prior to your appointment. Don't worry if you cannot answer all the questions at home, as your Health Practitioner will go through everything with you.

How much does the NLFA cost?

The NLFA costs $110 (incl. GST).

Some Grand United members can get a generous rebate depending on their annual benefit limit.
