Botanical name

Arctium lappa

English, European and North American herbalists have used burdock root in remedies for a variety of conditions that required 'blood purification', such as boils, arthritis, gout and skin disease. Burdock is traditionally classified as an alterative (blood purifier), metabolic diuretic (promoting waste elimination via kidneys), cholagogue (promoting bile flow and liver elimination), lymphatic (promoting lymph drainage) and mild diaphoretic (promoting perspiration). By enhancing the elimination of wastes through the kidneys, bowel, lymph and skin, it is believed it enables the body to reduce the inflammatory and toxic load on its tissues.
