Aloe vera, Aloe barbadensis

Aloe leaf contains a mucilaginous gel that is very cooling and soothing. It also contains small amounts of latex, just under the leaf, that is a potent laxative. Most products on the market utilise only the inner gel or juice. This information only refers to this part of Aloe.


Aloe has healing, antiinflammatory, immune-stimulating, antibacterial and soothing qualities that particularly lend it to skin and digestive problems. It also encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria in the bowel.

Conditions commonly used for
  • Skin burns, abrasions, irritations and inflammations
  • Digestive irritations and inflammations (eg.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease)
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Intestinal infections
  • Conditions of poor immunity
  • Diabetes (can lower blood sugar)
Common dosage range
  • For general use: up to 2 Tbsp three times/day
  • For burns or wound healing, topically: aloe vera gel applied liberally (fresh gel from aloe plant is best)
Cautions, Contraindications and Side Effects

  • Aloe latex should be avoided.
  • Aloe gel is safe for external use, unless it causes a rare allergic reaction. Discontinue use if it irritates the skin. It is not useful for treatment of deep, vertical wounds (eg. caesarean incision).
  • Aloe gel is regarded as safe for internal use, unless it causes rare allergic reaction.
  • Blood glucose levels should be monitored carefully in diabetic patients using Aloe vera either alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications in order to avoid
