Cholesterol - High

Standard Definition

The normal recommended cholesterol levels are below 200 mg/dl (5.2 mmol/litre). Elevated cholesterol is a strong risk factor for heart disease, however people with low levels have died from heart attacks. Therefore, labs now subdivide total cholesterol measurement into several components including LDL ("bad") cholesterol (which is directly linked to heart disease) and HDL ("good") cholesterol. The relative amount of HDL to LDL is more important than total cholesterol. Evaluation of your results requires consultation with your healthcare practitioner. Triglycerides (TGs) are a group of fatty compounds that, if elevated, also increase the risk of developing heart disease. The following material is limited to information about the lowering of high cholesterol and triglyceride levels using natural approaches. Because high cholesterol and triglycerides is linked to atherosclerosis and heart disease, people concerned about heart disease should also read the section on Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease.

Underlying Disruption in Function

High cholesterol must be assessed in relation to other cardiovascular risk factors, and on it’s own does not give an adequate measure of risk. Many other factors, such as homocysteine levels, must be assessed and taken into account. It is important to note that when cholesterol is oxidised it becomes damaging to the blood vessels, causing atherosclerosis. So in fact treatment aims may not be to just reduce cholesterol but to make sure it does not get damaged or oxidised. For more information see Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease.
