Saw Palmetto

Botanical name

Serenoa serrulata, Serenoa repens, Sabal serrulata

Actions

First used in the treatment of BPH late in the nineteenth century, Saw palmetto has been the subject numerous laboratory and clinical studies. These experiments demonstrated Saw palmetto's anti-oestrogenic and anti-androgenic (-testosterone) effects and confirmed that the extract affects many hormonally dependent pathways for prostate growth. These are considered significant interventions in the treatment of BPH. A mild diuretic, antiinflammatory and urinary antiseptic, Saw palmetto reduces inflammation and the tendency to infection in the genitourinary tract. Traditionally seen as a nutritious tonic for both female and male reproductive systems and urinary tracts, the berry was also used to increase breast milk supply.

Conditions commonly used for

Saw palmetto berry extract is a leading treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Researchers have concluded that Saw palmetto can be as effective as the standard drug for BPH (Finasteride) in improving urine flow and urgency problems, without the side effects of the drug.

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Prostatitis
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Female androgen excess disorders, such as hirsutism and polycystic ovarian disease
  • Lack of breast milk

Common dosage range

All effective clinical trials have used a standardized liposterolic extract (standardized to contain 85% to 95% fatty acids and sterols) at 160 mg twice/day.

Cautions, Contraindications and Side Effects

  • Saw palmetto is a safe and well-tolerated herb. Adverse effects are very rare and include mild stomach upset.
  • Before taking Saw palmetto, you should get a firm diagnosis of BPH and should be closely monitored by your health care practitioner.
  • Do not use during pregnancy.
  • No clinically significant interactions between Saw palmetto and conventional medications have been reported in the literature to date. Because the mechanism of action for saw palmetto is similar to that for Finasteride, it has been recommended that this herb not be used in combination with finasteride or other antiandrogenic drugs.
